Be Prepared for Your First Pilates Session on the Reformer

Pilates reformer classes are quickly becoming one of the most effective ways to slim down and tone your body, but more often than not, people are asking, "What is it?" The moves are considered Pilates-based, but instead of rolling out a mat you're stepping onto what's known as a reformer, and not by any coincidence (we're sure) looks rather like a torture apparatus. Cables, bars, straps and pulleys will tighten and strengthen your muscles in ways you never ever thought possible, and could very well be more challenging than the mat. For Flat Abs: A classic Pilates move, the Roll Up is 38 percent more effective at targeting the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack”) and 245 percent more effective at targeting the obliques than a basic crunch, according to an Auburn University study. To do it, lie face-up with legs straight, ankles, knees, and thighs together.  Plantar flex feet and extend arms overhead. Inhale to prepare as you lift your head, neck, and shoulders off the floor. On your exhale, continue to roll up by drawing in abdominals, reaching arms parallel toward feet. Keep abdominals contracted, with spine rounded in a “C” curve (Scoop). Pause and inhale. On your exhale, roll down through each vertebra in a controlled movement, keeping heels pressed evenly into the floor the entire way up and down. Do 10 reps as controlled and precise as you can, as many days a week as possible.

Pilates break, I had to get into the water this afternoon, 
it was 81 degrees and sunny in Solana Beach. I paddled one mile out into the ocean to the amazing Kelp Beds. Then back to work to teach
the 5:15 Pilates Sculpt Class and the 6:30 Pilates Apparatus Class.

Summer is here and I have a few Beach Bum secrets for you...
Do Your Clams! 
Jane Fonda was totally on it. Mr. Pilates did it in the ’50s. 
 Lay on your side, knees bent in 90 degrees, feet stacked on top of each other:
1) External (Clam): heels & toes stay together, open your top leg so the knee goes up toward the sky, close. Repeat 10 times.
2) Internal (Flying Clam): heels & toes stay together, lift feet in the air, open your top leg so the knee goes up toward the sky, close. Repeat 10 times.
3) Parallel: keeping knees and ankles equal heights, lift top leg to hip height, lower. Repeat 10 times.
4) Internal/External: combination of 1 & 2, knees come together with heel up, then switch, heels together knee up. going back and forth. Repeat 10 times.
5) Straight leg/up & down: extend top leg so it is all the way straight and in line with the rest of the body (bottom leg stays bent in 90 degrees for balance). Lift the leg up to hip height, then lower. Repeat 10 times.
6) Straight leg/ Circles: same as above above, Now leg does small circles forward, up to hip height, back and back to straight in line with body. Repeat 10  times, then reverse directions.
This whole series can be done with an ankle weight to increase the results and make it more exciting!

In Pilates there are many different types of apparatus to workout with including the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair.  The other equipment is just as important for variations and assists, like the Roll Up Bar and Magic Circle. I love working with the bar pictured above to emphasize using core muscles.

In the morning I don't have time to cook, sit and eat breakfast.  I can make a smoothie in just a few minutes and take it to go.  I love Acai, the taste of chocolate + berries has me addicted.  People ask me all the time what is in my smoothie.  Here is the recipe that I've developed over the years.  Enjoy!

First I freeze all of my own fruit and berries, buy in bulk.
Almond Milk = 1c Water / 1c Raw Almonds (blended/strained)
1 Frozen Banana (broken into pieces before freezing)
5 Frozen Strawberries
1/2 c Frozen Blueberries
1 pack Frozen Acai
1 t Cinnamon
1 t Honey
1 t Flaxseed Oil
1 T Coconut Oil

I love it because it not only works the Gluteals but also the Inner Obliques.  I try to implement it at least once a week for my clients.  It can be done under the barre as pictured above or side under the barre, sitting center, or standing at the barre.

In Pilates there are many different apparatus and assist equipment to work with like the Magic Circle above.  It can be used in Mat classes, as well as, on the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair to add dimension while achieving core control. I like to add it to my barre workout as well!

I Love Almond Milk

I have been making my own Almond Milk for years.  After discovering that store bought Almond Milk contains oil and other additives, I decided to do it myself.  I soak raw organic almonds over night, put 1 cup of almonds in the blender with 2 cups water, squeeze through a cheese cloth and you have a nice glass of Almond Milk!  If you don't like the taste, I always add Cinnamon, but you can add Dates, Honey, Agave, Vanilla or anything you like.  I make smoothies with it, or have a bowl of cereal, and it makes great Latte's. I just found an article by Sylvia Harrell of Sattva, who describes a massage as more than just "fluff and pampering", it clearly helps nervous system relaxation and stress reduction, and when we utilize and challenge our bodies we also need to rest them. I truly believe this and try to see my masseuse every two weeks.  Here are a few benefits of massage therapy:

I discovered the new and improved Evolution Fresh juices this weekend as I was going from barre straight to Pilates and didn't have time to make a smoothie for breakfast.  I ran into Seaside Market and found Sweet Greens!  Evolution is not pasteurized it's actually cold-pressed so you get fresh fruits and vegetables as if they were just juiced for you! Imagine if you could always eat like this, for every single meal, with tiny portions, only a few pieces of fresh fruits and vegetables, a small cup of soup, a piece of bread, as if it were so easy.  These are images from Naomi O. whom I follow on Instagram because I fell love with her plates and scenic images. She is from Kobe, Japan and the photos of her meals are beautiful, intriguing, and make me want to eat healthy and enjoy my plate as much as she does.  I have seen some of her yummy sweets too!  What do you think?
